GSL Newsletter - Autumn 17

Dear Parents/Carers,

The new term has started with energy, enthusiasm and adventure that only scouting can provide. It has been great to visit all the sections and see the exciting activities going on as well as meeting our young people, new and old! A special welcome to our new young people and their Parents/Carers.

The last time I wrote we were at risk of closing a Beaver Colony. Thankfully we have had three volunteers to take on leadership roles and the colony is now up and running again, after a slightly longer summer break!

I cover quite a lot of information in this update - please read carefully to ensure we have all the information we need and you don't miss out!

Young Person Information

We store all our records and personal details in Online Scout Manager (OSM) this saves section leaders a significant amount of time in updating paper record cards and transferring information when young people move between sections. Parents/Carers can access this through My.Scout. Please can all Parents/Carers check and update their young person's records as soon as possible, and before half term NB You will have received an email with a link in it to do this. I appreciate that some information may need to be entered in multiple areas e.g. the home address may be the same for the Young Person, Contact 1 and Contact 2. Please avoid writing "see above" as we often need to export certain information e.g. a contacts list for camp and "above" may no longer exist! If you are having problems accessing My.Scout please look out for our "OSM Surgery" in the coming weeks or check our website

Census Information

As part of the annual census for the Scout Association we are required to collect and submit anonymised information on ethnicity and disabilities. To do this you will receive an email from OSM requesting this.No one can match these details to a young person's personal records - we receive a summary of numbers and who hasn't completed the form. Please complete these after you have checked/updated the personal details. If you have any questions please contact me directly.

Could you join our SAS?

Scout Active Support is the scout section for adults who want to help out but cannot commit to a regular role in a section (e.g. Section Leader or Section Assistant). Following on from my previous email I have had lots of willing offers to help out, but unable to commit to weekly meetings. This is the ideal opportunity to help you to join in the fun of scouting. We don't currently have an SAS at 1st Kesgrave but I would like to start one! To do this we need an organised person(s) to take on the role of SAS Manager to keep the records of the adult volunteers up to date and ensure they have completed their safeguarding checks. If you're a clear communicator, whizz with the computer and quick at sending emails this role would be ideal for you! Please contact me if you are interested.

Assistant Group Scout Leaders

Over the summer I sent out an advert to recruit for these essentially 'management' roles to support our section leaders. So far I have had one response and we have begun the appointments process, more information to follow! They'll be taking an overview of Beaver Scouts, so I'm looking for volunteers to look after our Cub Leaders and Scout Leaders. If you think you'd be interested in this role - please contact me!

We have lots of activities planned over the next few months, as well as the section programmes we have a number of fundraising activities for the group. Look out for information on our spectacular Christmas Fayre, the Scout Christmas Post as well as our monthly Jumble Sales.

I look forward to seeing you all at some point over the next term!

Yours sincerely,

Gareth Cox
Group Scout Leader
